Understanding the Double Burden of Disease: Need for Research and Medical Ethics for Effective Patient Management

  1. Globally, the leading cause of mortality has been attributed to Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) (World Health Organization, 2020) accounting for 74% of deaths reported in 2019 (WHO, 2020). More importantly, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ebola, Monkey Pox, and Marburg outbreaks the vulnerability of the healthcare systems of many developing countries like Ghana was exposed.

Today, developing countries and most countries in Africa are being faced with a double burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such that these have become significant contributors to disease burden as compared to some years past were morbidity, mortality and disability were mainly attributable to only communicable diseases (WHO, 2010; Ghana Health Service, 2014). Amidst all these, research remains relatively poor in our part of the world.
