Diabetes is a chronic, incurable condition with an estimated 2.6 million individuals diagnosed in Ghana. An estimated 2.3 million have type 2 disease, 0.3 million type 1 disease and another 500,000 are probably undiagnosed. Up to 15% of hospital in-patients will have diabetes.
Effective control of diabetes (glycaemic levels, blood pressure, dyslipidaemia) reduces the risk of developing long term complications and saves both lives and money. Sepsis is also prevalent in diabetic patients and requires special attention to curb complication in patient. Pharmacists are a well position to address issues of sepsis in Diabetics with their immense knowledge in rational use of antibiotic and the proper selection of antibiotics to aid treatment.
