The presentation will be delivered in two sections.
- Quality maternity care
- Overview of rights of women and newborn in maternity care
- Nonfinancial barriers to accessing quality maternity care
- Respectful Maternity Care (importance and strategies)
- Sources of disrespect and abuse to women by students during clinical
- Role of the following in student clinical concerning RMC:
- Students
- Tutors
- Health facility
- Community
Instructional Strategies / Teaching-Learning Approaches:
- Discussion: this will be used for overview of rights of women and newborn in maternity care
- Case history: a case history will be given and learners will be asked to assess the quality of care. This is to find out if they can identify any disrespectful and abusive issues in the care given in the case history.
- Group work / presentations:
Assessment Strategies
- Pretest – 5 questions
- Post-test -10 questions (80% to pass mark)

Overview
Course Description
A qualitative review of studies found that globally women place high value on RMC, and providers also perceive RMC to be a critical component of providing safe good-quality care (World Health Organization, 2018). In Ghana, a qualitative inquiry on RMC by Dzomeku, et al., (2020) in Kumasi found a disconnection between the awareness and practice of RMC by midwives.
This unit is structured to equip midwives (students/clinicians) with knowledge on Respectful Maternity Care (RMC). It will also equip them with the appropriate skill and attitude to exhibit when providing high quality maternal and newborn care right from pre-conception to postnatal stage.
