This training program by NOVARTIS SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA – PHARMACY ACADEMY will educate pharmacists in Sub-Saharan Africa on pain management in the pharmacy; with emphasis on how to diagnose the different types of pain, how to manage pain, when to refer a patient, and also to train pharmacist on NSAID use/abuse.

5. To define chronic low back pain
6. Identify mechanical low back pain/ sinister back pain
7. Match appropriately treatment algorithm with patient needs
8. Identify surgical patients
9. differentiate between neuropathic and neuromuscular pain
10. understand the important causes of pain and the mechanisms
11. know the essential investigations
12. plan appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological intervention for patients with pain syndromes
13. Become familiar with how to:
i. Understand pathways and basic mechanisms of pain
ii. Make accurate diagnosis
iii. Exclude mimics (malingering, conversion disorder)
iv. Identify extent of involvement
v. Ascertain the underlying cause/risk factors
