Professor Ebenezer Anno Nyako was born on 12th August, 1954 at Suhum in the Eastern Region of Ghana. He attended Presbyterian Primary and Middle School in Larteh and had his ‘O’ Level and ‘A’ Level education at Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School and Opoku-Ware Secondary School respectively. He obtained INTERAF Scholarship to study Dentistry at the University of Cairo, Egypt in 1975 and graduated with BDS in 1980. After his house job in 1981 at the Awolowo University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria, he proceeded to do his Residency training at the West African College of Surgeons and was awarded a Fellow in 1989. Upon his return to Ghana, he was appointed Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in 1991. He volunteered as a Part-Time Lecturer of the University of Ghana Dental School in 1994 and later joined the faculty as a full-time Lecturer in 1995. For his postgraduate qualifications, Prof. Nyako is a Fellow of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS), Fellow of the West Africa College of Surgeons (WACS) and had his Master of Dental Science from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom in 2003.

He is an Associate Professor, Restorative Dentistry Department, current Dean of University of Ghana Dental School (UGDS) and one of the pioneer lecturers following the localization of the Clinical Dental Program at the University of Ghana. He was the Vice Dean of UGDS from 2010 to 2014. He has served as the Secretary for both Faculty of Dental Surgery WACS, and GCPS. He became the Chairman, Faculty of Dentistry, GCPS between 2005 and 2014, Member of the Faculty Board of Dental Surgery, GCPS. He currently a member of Council West African College of Surgeons (WACS).

He has over 33 years of teaching experience in Dentistry and had served as Trainer and Examiner, GCPS and WACS as well as External Assessor. He supervises Postgraduate Fellowship Research and Thesis. He assisted in the development of Restorative Dentistry curriculum for both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. He also developed curriculums for Dental Technology, Dental Surgery Assistant, Hygienist and Dental Therapist Programs. He is the current Editor in Chief, Ghana Dental Journal, Member of the Editorial Board, Ghana Medical Journal, West African Journal, and Nigerian Journal of Restorative Dentistry.

He was a member of the WAHU Committee for the Harmonization both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Training for Anglophone and Francophone countries in ECOWAS region. Prof. Nyako was a book reviewer i.e. Chapter 10- DCP 3(Disease Control Priorities – Economic evaluation for health. World Bank Group. Publishers, Seatle WA, USA and has about 42 research publications to his credit.

He is a joint editor of the book ‘‘Dentistry in Ghana: The Journey so far and the Challenges ahead’’ which he would be speaking on today.
