Professor Greg Calligaro is a distinguished senior specialist in the Division of Pulmonology at Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH), Cape Town. He also serves as a research coordinator at the Centre for Lung Infection and Immunity within the University of Cape Town (UCT) Lung Institute. His extensive professional background and academic achievements have positioned him as a leading figure in the field of pulmonology and respiratory medicine.

Professor Calligaro completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2001, earning a Bachelor of Science with Honors in Physiology, followed by an MBBCh degree. He later specialized in internal medicine, qualifying as a specialist physician in 2009, and further specialized in respiratory medicine in 2012 at UCT. He holds a Diploma in Primary Emergency Care (Dip PEC) and a Master of Medicine (MMed) from UCT, along with a Fellowship of the College of Physicians (FCP) and a Certificate in Pulmonology.

In his current roles, Professor Calligaro serves as a consultant in the Department of Medicine and the Respiratory Clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital. His contributions to the medical field are multifaceted, including the establishment of an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) service at GSH. Additionally, he leads the medical team of the first lung transplant center in an academic hospital in South Africa. In 2016, he completed a prestigious Fellowship in thoracic transplantation at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney, further solidifying his expertise in lung transplantation and advanced chronic lung disease management.

Professor Calligaro's clinical interests are diverse, encompassing cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and lung transplantation. His research is particularly focused on HIV-related lung disease, innovative diagnostics for tuberculosis (TB), and the medical and surgical management of drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB. He is currently pursuing a PhD examining lung health in patients with HIV infection on antiretroviral treatment.

In addition to his clinical and research responsibilities, Professor Calligaro is actively involved in various professional organizations. He chairs the Heart and Lung Committee of The Transplantation Society and serves as an Executive Committee member of the South African Thoracic Society. His dedication to advancing pulmonary medicine and improving patient outcomes is evident in his ongoing contributions to both clinical practice and scientific research.
