Eric Bateman is Emeritus Professor of Medicine, University of Cape Town, Founder and former Director of the UCT Lung Institute, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, an Elected Fellow of UCT, a Founding Fellow of the European Respiratory Society, and an Honorary Life Fellow of the South African Thoracic Society.

He has an A-rating for research (NRF South Africa) for research on the treatment of asthma, chronic obstructive airways disease and tuberculosis, and community-based interventions to improve the care of patients with chronic respiratory diseases.

Prof Bateman has Authored > 300 publications. He Serves on Editorial Boards of several international journals.

Recent awards: National Science and Technology Forum BHP Billiton Lifetime Award for Contribution to Science, Engineering, Technology; (2014); Fellowship in the Art and Science of Medicine (GOLD) (South African Medical Association; 2014); the SAMRC’s Lifetime Achievement Award (Platinum Medal; 2014); European Thoracic Society President’s Award (2012) for his global contribution to Respiratory Medicine, and UCT Alan Pifer Award (2012) for welfare-related research.

He is Member the Board of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), served as President of the South African Thoracic Society and in the Executive of the Global Alliance Against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (WHO).
