Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye is the Director General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), where he leads the development and execution of impactful strategies to address critical challenges in Ghana's health sector. Appointed by the President of the Republic of Ghana in an acting capacity on November 25, 2019, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye succeeded Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, who was reassigned as the Presidential Advisor on Health. This appointment was formalized pending the advice of the governing council of the Ghana Health Service in consultation with the Public Service Commission. Prior to assuming this leadership role, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye served as the Director of the Family Health Division of the GHS, a position he held from 2014, contributing significantly to maternal, newborn, and child health initiatives across the country.
With over 27 years of experience as a clinician and Public Health Physician and two decades in healthcare management and practice, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye is recognized as a Senior Public Health Physician Specialist. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and holds a Bachelor of Surgery and a Master of Public Health degree. His contributions to public health are evident through his extensive publications and role on the Editorial Board of the MEDICC Review. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing maternal and child health, spearheading flagship programs such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Accelerated Fund Program, the Ghana Limited Obstetric Ultrasonography Program for Primary Health Care, the Girls’ Iron Folic Acid Supplementation Program, and the Medical Screening for Schools Program.
As a maternal health advocate, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye has worked tirelessly to reduce maternal mortality and improve the wellbeing of women and children in Ghana. His leadership in family health and nutrition has been pivotal in shaping policies and programs that have improved healthcare delivery at both national and community levels. His dedication to public health, combined with his strategic vision for Ghana's healthcare system, continues to drive progress in achieving better health outcomes for all Ghanaians.
