Dr. Nqoba Israel Tsabedze is a clinician scientist specializing in cardiology, currently working at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. He holds the position of Associate Professor at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where he is deeply involved in academic and clinical research. After completing his medical degree at the University of the Witwatersrand, Dr. Tsabedze pursued a specialization in internal medicine, earning his Fellowship with the College of Physicians of South Africa.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Tsabedze is a PhD candidate at the University of the Witwatersrand. His research focuses on identifying the genetic factors responsible for idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, particularly within the local population. He has received several notable awards in recognition of his work, including a prestigious Carnegie research grant, the South African Heart Association research award for 2016, and the South African Medical Association PhD scholarship in the same year.
Dr. Tsabedze is dedicated to the education and training of both undergraduate and postgraduate students. His research interests span acute and chronic heart failure epidemiology in sub-Saharan Africa, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and hypertensive heart disease. His goal is to conduct globally competitive research that is relevant to and responsive to the health needs of South Africa. Through his work, he aims to improve the health and quality of life for all South Africans.
In his leadership roles, Dr. Tsabedze serves as the Academic Head of the Division of Cardiology at the University of the Witwatersrand and as the Clinical Head of the Division of Cardiology at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. He is also an active executive member of the South African Heart Association and chairs the SA Heart SHARE Registry. Furthermore, he is the Vice-President of the Heart Failure Society of South Africa (HEFSSA) and has recently joined the Executive Committee of the South African Hypertension Society. His passion for teaching and advancing the field of cardiology remains a central focus of his career.
