Dr. Michael Owusu BSc, Msc, PhD

Dr. Michael Owusu is the Executive Director of the Centre for Health Systems Strengthening and a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

He has over 10 years of experience in both clinical research and biomedical laboratory practice. He holds PhD in Clinical Microbiology and is currently supporting the Virology Team at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR). He is also a fellow of the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership and the African Research Excellence Fund (AREF). Dr. Owusu has in-depth knowledge in medical laboratory diagnostics, laboratory system management and laboratory quality assurance. He has worked with laboratory experts from the German Accreditation Board in strengthening typhoid diagnostic surveillance at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine and also supported Quality Management System implementation at the Microbiology Department of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and other peripheral laboratories. In the area of virology and zoonosis, Dr. Owusu has extensive experience in investigating livestock and wildlife samples for agents including coronaviruses, livestock acquired Staphylococcus aureus and viral haemorrhagic viruses.

He is part of the lead scientists supporting the testing of SARS-CoV-2 at KCCR. Dr. Owusu has advanced knowledge in public health, epidemiologic surveillance and health systems strengthening. He has collaborated in diverse ways in strengthening the public health systems in Ghana and supported development of essential documents needed to improve human resource capacity building in the health sector.
