Dr. Bertha Serwa Ayi is an Infectious Disease Consultant at Essentia Health West in Fargo, ND, USA. She is a clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of North Dakota and the Kansas Health Science Center. In Ghana she is an adjunct lecturer at the University of Development Studies, University of Health and Allied Sciences and the Accra College of Medicine.
She is the President of the Ghana Physicians and Surgeons Foundation of North America (GPSF). She was awarded the Alcon/Paracelsus Award in Ophthalmology when she graduated from the University of Ghana Medical School in 1997. She completed Internal Medicine Residency training at Good Samaritan Hospital Inc., affiliated with John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore Maryland in 2002. In 2004, she completed fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at a combined training program at Creighton University, University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She holds a Master’s in Business Administration with a focus on Health Services Administration from the University of South Dakota, graduating in 2013.
She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and subspecialty Infectious Diseases. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP) and the Infectious Disease Society of America (FIDSA). She is an author who has published books, several book chapters in textbooks and written in several medical journals and internet publications. She was appointed a member of the case management technical working group of Africa CDC’s Task Force on COVID-19 (AfTCOR) and is a Board Member of Mercy Ships International. In 2015 she won the Women of Excellence award in the category of Women Striving to Improve the Quality of Life, under the auspices of Women Aware. In 2016, GhanaMaa, awarded her the Yaa Asantewaa Woman Distinction Award.
