DCOP/Dr. Ellen Adobea Sam is an experienced and dedicated clinical pharmacist with over twenty-five years of practice in providing pharmaceutical care and clinical training. She is a Deputy Commissioner of Police and the Chief Pharmacist at the Ghana Police Hospital, where she oversees all pharmaceutical-related matters within the Ghana Police Service. Additionally, she serves as the Principal Clinical Pharmacist at the Police Hospital, with a focus on medication therapy management, patient education, and medication safety.

Dr. Sam’s extensive clinical experience spans patient care, drug therapy management, infectious disease management, and pharmacovigilance. She has been actively involved in the development of clinical guidelines, quality assurance management, and drug use evaluation. Her work has included counseling and monitoring patients on HIV and TB treatment, leading antimicrobial stewardship efforts, and being a focal point for malaria management within the institution. She has also contributed significantly to training pharmacy staff, interns, and postgraduate students in clinical pharmacy practice.

As an adjunct lecturer at the Department of Pharmacy Practice at both the School of Pharmacy, KNUST, and Central University College, Dr. Sam imparts her knowledge of clinical pharmacy to the next generation of pharmacists. Her areas of expertise include patient education, medication safety, and the development and implementation of pharmaceutical care programs.

Dr. Sam is a respected member of several professional groups, including the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, the Ghana College of Pharmacists, and the Police Hospital Board. She is also involved in various committees, such as the Antimicrobial Resistance Working Group and the Technical Advisory Committee on the Safety of Medicines for the Food and Drugs Authority of Ghana. Her leadership extends to her previous role as the Board Chair of the African Media and Malaria Research Network.

In addition to her clinical and teaching roles, Dr. Sam has been a prominent speaker at workshops and seminars both locally and internationally. She has also contributed to national health programs and has been featured in various radio and television health programs. Her research has been published in renowned journals, including a study on adherence to antiretroviral therapy among people attending a public HIV clinic in Ghana.

Dr. Sam holds a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm D) from KNUST, a Master’s in Clinical Pharmacy, and a Postgraduate Diploma with distinction in Clinical Pharmacy from Robert Gordon University, Scotland. She is committed to continuous professional development, having attended numerous workshops and training programs throughout her career.
