Diabetes is increasingly becoming an issue of major public health concern, with Type 2 diabetes accounting for 95% of cases. Research have revealed that early detection and optimum management of Type 2 diabetes reduces the risk of cardiovascular complications.
Dr Henrietta FISCIAN a Senior Specialist and Endocrinologist at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital will via this 20 minute lecture provide an overview of the management of Type 2 diabetes focusing on recommendations by guidelines and how pharmacological therapy can be tailored to the individual patient needs.
Metabolic syndrome represents a cluster of risk factors that greatly predispose an individuals to cardiovascular disease, stroke and even diabetes. High blood pressure is a key component of Metabolic Syndrome and adequate therapeutic management of hypertension in Metabolic syndrome involves addressing the prohypertensive mechanisms implicated in the latter.
Dr Aba Ankomaba FOLSON a Senior Physician Specialist and Cardiologist at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital will explore the definition of Metabolic Syndrome and the risk factors implicated, while zooming in on the therapeutic choices for managing hypertension in Metabolic Syndrome.
At the end of this training, participants will
1. Understand the rationale behind the recommendation by guidelines in managing Type 2 diabetes.
2. Determine the individual patient needs that inform the choice of anti diabetic drug.
3. Define metabolic syndrome.
4. Outline the risk factors of metabolic syndrome.
5. Understand the pathophysiology of hypertension in metabolic syndrome.
6. Understand the rationale for the antihypertensive choices in Metabolic syndrome.
