Dr. Baffoe Gyan is the Director of Medical Affairs at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). Prior to this role, he served as the Head of the Department of Cardiothoracic/Vascular Surgery and the Department of Surgery at UGMC. With over 24 years of professional experience in cardiovascular surgery, Dr. Gyan has contributed significantly to the development and advancement of medical services in Ghana, particularly in the area of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery. He joined UGMC in 2019, where he successfully established the Cardiothoracic Vascular Department, further solidifying his commitment to the healthcare sector.

Dr. Gyan’s educational journey began at Wenchi Secondary School, followed by a scholarship to Cuba, where he completed his junior and high school certificates. He pursued his medical degree at the High Institute of Medical Sciences Santa Clara/Villa Clara in Cuba, graduating with First Class Honors. After completing his housemanship at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana, he returned to Cuba to undertake a postgraduate program in general surgery. His specialization in cardiovascular surgery began in 2003, and he became a fellow of the Cuban College of Cardiovascular Surgery in 2007. During this time, Dr. Gyan also enhanced his expertise through specialized training in off-pump cardiac surgeries, heart transplants, and ventricular assist device insertions in Argentina and Uruguay.

Dr. Gyan’s work experience spans various renowned institutions, both in Ghana and internationally. He worked as a Consultant Cardiovascular Surgeon at the National Cardiothoracic Centre, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, for a decade before transitioning to UGMC. His expertise has also been honed through hands-on experience at prestigious institutions such as Foundacion Favaloro and Hospital Agudo Cosmos Argerich in Argentina, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, and Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre in South Africa. These international experiences have significantly shaped his skills in complex cardiovascular procedures and furthered his reputation as a highly sought-after surgeon.

Dr. Gyan’s professional interests focus on complex aortic surgeries and heart transplants, with a particular research interest in Chronic Thrombolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Pulmonary Embolism. Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Gyan is known for his exceptional leadership and communication skills. He is an effective team manager, a critical thinker, and a creative problem solver, qualities that have allowed him to lead various departments successfully. His ability to build strong, professional relationships with colleagues and patients alike has contributed to his success and recognition as a respected leader in the medical community, both in Ghana and across West Africa.

Fluent in English, Spanish, and Twi, and with knowledge of Portuguese, Dr. Gyan’s multilingual abilities enhance his capacity to connect with a diverse range of patients and colleagues. His commitment to improving healthcare and patient outcomes remains at the core of his professional endeavors.
