Summary

Course Description

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally. In Ghana, CVDs form the majority of non-communicable diseases and has emerged as an important cause of hospitalizations and premature death. The trend of rising CVD is driven by several factors including hypertension, diabetes, overweight and obesity, sedentary life style amongst others. These conditions put individuals at risk for diseases of the heart and blood vessels such as myocardial infarction (heart attacks), stroke and premature death.

What is the scope of this problem in Ghana? How do we predict which individuals have a high risk of developing these conditions? How do then put measures in place to prevent these individuals from developing these conditions? This training is tailored at answering these important questions.

It will also provide insights on the effect of COVID-19 on the Heart in the light of the ongoing pandemic.

Course Objectives

At the end of this training, participants should:

  1. Gain knowledge on the type and distribution of CVDs among adults and children in Ghana
  2. Be enlightened on the burden of CVD in Ghana; the scope of diseases, disability and death associated with CVD in Ghana as well as structures in place to curtail the rising burden of CVD in Ghana.
  3. Learn about CV risk stratification tools and how they can guide us to put in place strategies to prevent CVD in our patients. Strategies available for CVD prevention including lifestyle changes and drug therapy.
  4. Learn about updates on COVID-19 and the Heart
